This website gains presumed reputation from being a website that is “.org”. It also is presumed because of the subject matter being about breast cancer.

Week 12 Question 3

I will list some ideas in dot point format to express what issues may affect perceived web credibility in the future.
  • Due to the vast amounts of websites that share information, the content you view will be so tailored to your viewpoint that conflicting ideas wont be expressed or discussed within the webpages you visit. This puts you inside a thought bubble where you don’t listen to other points of view. This is where Facebook is heading with tailored posts to your ideologies are more likely to be shown on your feed.
  • Since its becoming more acceptable to show ad’s on your website people could slowly integrate ad’s into posts or ideas instead of having them on the side a post. So a company pays for you to write a good review on their product instead of just putting a picture advertising their brand.
  • Nowadays credibility is not determined by a persons place in a field, like a scientist talking about global warming, its determined by what they say about said issue. This puts a person into a thought bubble that rejects anything that doesn’t go with their viewpoint. which stunts a persons mental growth.
  • Now that people don’t accept viewpoints of professionals, truth does not matter, the only thing that matters is if the person is saying what you agree with. This is not conducive to an intelligent society.

Week 12 Question 2

The reason I believe Wikipedia is not an acceptable source of credible information is because of its nature. Wikipedia is not a site that only allows credible sources to publish information. The site gives the ability for a person to manipulate information for their own beliefs, this is why you cannot site Wikipedia as a source. Another reason is when publishing on Wikipedia the information doesn’t get reviewed by scholarly people like peer reviewed journals are, this gives the power to the uninformed or people who can gain from the manipulation of facts. Also if I wanted to write a paper on how the Australian government is corrupt, I could just make a Wikipedia with false facts in them that I can site, this is a clearly corrupt way to prove a point within a scholarly paper. When you cite a source in an academic paper it needs to be credible because the point you are proving needs to have weight behind it, if you site untrusted source the weight behind your argument is lost; so the ability for you to prove a point is lost. As a university student you need to be able to back up your ideas with facts that have been reviewed by their peer because if we didn’t everything that was published would contradict each other.

Week 11 Question 3

The reason why it is important to study psychology when a person is interacting with design and why it needs to be looked at is because if a person perceives an object to be pleasing it will increase their happiness and readiness to use that object. If you want to be competitive in an open market you need to make sure the user feels the most comfortable using your design over someone else’s, if you do that then your product will succeed, just look at Facebook verse Myspace and how it won. You are designing objects to be used by people, so it is only smart to take in account how they feel when interacting with your design.

Week 11 Question 2

There are many ways you can “chunk” information to reduce the cognitive load on the user, when you chunk items together you create a more concise and structured object. chunking in a sense is a way of grouping ideas together, a very easy way to think about this is how a programmer programmes. Programmers are taught that there are thousands of different ways to program the same task, but only one of them is the most concise and chunked together. For example if I wanted to create a code that helped children learn counting numbers in groups of five, and wanted the child to define where the number would start from, there are many ways I could tackle this task. one example of doing this code very poorly is this.

Now this code will do what I want it to do, but it is poorly designed and not the best most concise way I could design my code. Take this code for example that does the exact same thing.

This code has been chunked together from the first example by using more concise code. This is an example of how chunking can increase design efficiency. We started off with seven lines of code and ended with only having 4, This type of efficiency puts less stress on the computer and reduces file size, both of which are important when realising how important efficiency is.  We have reduces the cognitive load through better designed code.

Week 11 Question 1

This article talks about the different types of factors that effect the performance of a task. there are evidence about how having a clear vision of the end result keeps the person completing the task on track (Herrick, 2009). this reduces the cognitive load because the worker doesn’t need to think about where the task will go next, he only thinks about what hes doing right now. Although, creating more efficient methods of communication could yield worse results. There are arguments to be made that doing things like using acronyms, which are more efficient, can have the adverse affect; Because they might work on computer systems doesn’t mean that they will work with us (Hasman, 2014). The design of Facebook and Myspace was completely different, Facebook puts little cognitive load on the user compared to Myspace; and this is one of the reasons Facebook won the battle of social media because their design was far better than Myspace (Hartung, 2011). Designs affect on learning is also noted by Joyce McLeod “We chose to view the three key elements of classroom management — efficient use of time and classroom space.”(McLeod, 2003, Pg 183) she also goes on to explain this will increase student achievement when they are put in an efficient environment.
